We see cloud computing offerings today that are suitable to host enterprise architectures. But while these offerings provide clear benefits to corporations by providing capabilities complementary to what they have, the fact that they can help to elastically scale enterprise architectures should not be understood to also mean that simply scaling in this way will meet twenty-first-century computing requirements.

What is Platform as a Service (PaaS)?
Mitesh Soni - Research Engineer at iGATE Patni

What exactly Service models mean? In plain English, Models which provides “Services”. We get Electricity as a service in our daily routine and we pay for what we use right? Similarly we get “Services” from the Cloud Service Providers in different forms. Service models are also known as SPI Model: Software as a Service Platform as a Service Infrastructure as a Service So, let’s talk about Platform as a Service, commonly known as PaaS in the Cloud World.

The Cloud Lock-In (Part 2): The Great Lock-In of PaaS
Ofir Nachmani - Founder and Author at I Am OnDemand blog

PaaS is evolving to become the masterful approach towards “cloud software development”. When approaching PaaS, the IT organization should take in mind that there is a reasonable risk that it will quickly be tied to a single programming platform and will not be able to move its applications and data between vendors (PaaS or IaaS). One of the main key points for this discussion is the IaaS portability capability. Let’s first define these two types of a PaaS vendor: 1 - Public PaaS: The public PaaS vendor offering includes the hosting platform. The IaaS layer isn’t exposed to the PaaS customer. The customer doesn’t control the IaaS layer at all and the IaaS portability is limited only to the IaaS platforms which the PaaS vendor supports. 2 - Private PaaS: The private PaaS vendor delivers only the wrapper layer that enables the application deployment over an IaaS. The customer has full control over the IaaS including its portability. Plan Your PaaS Strategy: Few First Steps
Ofir Nachmani - Founder at I Am OnDemand

According to Gartner’s PaaS Road Map report, cloud-based solutions will grow at a faster rate than on-premises solutions. By 2015, 50% of all ISVs will be SaaS providers. Most enterprises will hold major part of their business applications running on the cloud computing infrastructure, using PaaS and SaaS technologies directly or indirectly.

Force.com sheds the proprietary tag...almost
Subraya Mallya - Principal at PrudentCloud.com

Force.com for all the accolades still carried the tag of being proprietary, built around a proprietary technology Apex and proprietary database. Salesforce.com shed part of stigma with the announcement of VMForce last year, opening up the platform for Java Developers albeit just the Spring faction. Today they took another big step when they announced the acquisition of Heroku, the leading Ruby on Rails Platform.

Medical Foods Sample Inventory Management PDF
Andrew Lawlor - CEO at Aptaria, Inc.

Nutricia, a unit of global food player Danone, has grown rapidly in recent years by developing and selling specialized nutritional products. Key to the their sales team’s success has been delivery of over 3,000 product samples to doctors and other health care professionals (HCPs) each month. Yet Nutricia lacked a centralized way to track which HCPs received which samples from which salesperson. This meant the company was not capable of properly executing product recalls – putting them at significant federal regulatory risk. Aptaria built a custom Salesforce application in the Cloud for Nutricia that provides full visibility into its product sample inventory. The solution enables sales reps to: o Track and manage samples through a personal inventory captured in Salesforce. o Accept samples into their inventory with a single click upon arrival from the Nutricia warehouse. o Identify samples delivered to doctors and other HCPs without re-keying information. To ensure seamless integration with Nutricia’s existing CRM, Aptaria built the application 100% on Force.com, Salesforce’s platform as a service (PaaS) offering.

Don't Pass on PaaS in 2010
Sam Charrington - VP, Product Management & Marketing at Appistry, Inc

There is no question that enterprises today are looking to the clouds to create efficiencies, gain competitive advantage and realize significant cost savings. Where the debate often emerges is around the cloud approach selected and employed - namely, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS). While IaaS solutions are interesting, they fail to fully deliver on the scalability, elasticity and cost improvements enterprises seek to gain by moving applications to the cloud. This is due to the fact that the tru costs of delivering applications and services in a cloud environment relate not to the racking and stacking of infrastructure, but rather to the development, deployment and management of applications - and only PaaS solutions can address these costs. Here is a look at what exactly a platform-oriented cloud solution provides.

GenieDB Technology Overview White Paper PDF
Alaric Snell-Pym - Chief Software Architect at GenieDB
Company Profile: GenieDB

Over the past few years, "scaling" and "availability" have come to vie with "cutting costs" and "delivering new features" as major headaches for the CTOs of online businesses. With Moore's Law starting to lose steam, existing applications can no longer be scaled by simply buying faster hardware each year; instead, scaling an application has become an exercise in rebuilding it to utilize techniques such as sharding or non-SQL databases, while struggling to keep the existing live system going despite rising load, before users start leaving in frustration.

The whitepaper also provides strategies for success, including advice from companies such as Thomson-Reuters, CODA and Intralinks that have already been down that road as well as top Cloud experts from Navatar Group and Deloitte Consulting.
