With business models designed to assess the viability of multi million dollar infrastructure investments with long term pay backs it is not surprising that the natural approach when looking at SaaS is a top down view. Experience shows that this approach has not been successful. The challenge when SaaS offerings are focused on "products" is that it's the responsibility of the customer to make the connection between what is being offered and their business needs. The connection is often not made and although the "product" could address a real business requirement the customer does not buy. An alternative is niche segmentation and reference selling.
